Having a sound sleep - Turn off your brain before you go to bed

In today's fast life, our minds get tired more often than our body, due to constant buzzing of work, emails, social media and the pressure of staying connected always. Our minds are constantly sifting throughout the day - work related thoughts, stress, ever growing to-do lists etc.

So, more often than not, it is very difficult for people to turn off these thoughts before they go to bed, which leads to disturbed sleeping patterns, and tossing and turning over the night.

To ensure a proper and sound sleep which rests our brain, one has to keep out all of these thoughts from the mind. How???

By turning off your brain before bedtime. Here is how to do it :

Switch OFF any electronic devices

One hour before you go to sleep, you should start winding down for the day. Turn off the television, computers, laptops and "most important" - put your mobile phone away for good. Use this time to catch up on reading, meditation or just have a good chit chat with the members of your family. Staying away from electronic items will eliminate the blue light, it is this blue light that keeps you from falling asleep easily.

Remember the 2:00 AM Facebook updates checks, anyone?

Make a to-do list for the Next Day

Instead of having a non-stop train of thoughts rushing through your mind when you to bed, try to make a list of all the things that you would like to do the next day. Writing down or taking a note of these thoughts can help you to empty your mind. Which simply means there would not be any over use of the brain when you finally go to bed.

Read

Try to think, when was the last time that you picked up your favorite book and spent some time on reading it, without constantly checking your mobile phone? This is one of the best way to relax. Using this pre-bedtime time to catch up on your reading helps in redirecting your thoughts. It is also a good way to lull your stressed mind to sleep, as this activity helps in reducing stress.

Use Warm Lights

Once you reach home after a long day at work, use soft and warm lights rather than white or fluorescent lighting. Warm light is easier on your eyes, and it helps your eyes and your body to adjust for relaxation. By spending more time in warm lighting, your brain also gets signals, that it is evening time and basically a time to relax and unwind.

Apart from these tips, you should also take good care of your health and diet. These factors also play an important role in maintaining a anxiety-free and relaxed lifestyle.
