Postpartum Period of Mothers

Congratulations! After the birth of your baby, you have been promoted to parenthood!!

When a woman gives birth, it is a happy moment for all. In spite of the pain and discomfort which a woman has to endure, child-birth is a very long-awaited culmination of pregnancy, and also it is the start of a new life.

The period which is six weeks after birth of a child is called the Postpartum period.

The postpartum period is a very special phase in life, for both the new parents. For women who have experienced the process of birth first time in their lives, it is a life changing event.
For both parents, this period is marked by :

  • Strong emotions of their new parenthood
  • Altered relationships as the parents adjust to their new found roles
  • Adjustment to their roles
This period is also very critical to the health of a new mother. It is to be noted, that often the mother is ignored in this period. When the mother was pregnant, all attention was on her diet, exercise and well being. When the baby arrives, all focus shifts to the baby!

All the family members get busy looking after the baby, and start giving different advice to the mother in regards to the baby!

"Do not eat this, it will affect the baby"
"Do not go out, you have to feed the baby"
"Do not sit like that, keep the baby's neck straight"

While following all this advice, even the new mother starts ignoring her own health, since she is only thinking about the baby diet, health and well being.

Please remember! You have to take care of your health as well!!

The period after a birth of baby is a period of change, a change in body, a change in sleep patterns, a change in diet. This change makes huge demand on the mother's body.

If the mother is not taken care properly during this period, it can definitely lead to ill-health and can even result in long term permanent damage to the mother's health!!

The new mother needs a lot of support, understanding and care from her spouse and family members.

So, do not ignore your own health while taking care of the little one!
